New methodology demonstrates potential to help surgeons identify cancerous tissue during procedures with speed and precision
Boston, MA — March 20, 2026 — Lucell Diagnostics Inc. announced findings, now published in Bioelectricity, describing its Membrane Voltage Profiling (MVPro™) platform, a novel intraoperative imaging methodology designed to help surgeons rapidly identify cancerous tissue during surgery.
Incomplete tumor removal remains a significant challenge in surgical oncology, often requiring additional procedures and increasing risk to patients. MVPro addresses this challenge by leveraging a newly characterized physiological biomarker of cancer: cell membrane depolarization.
Using fluorescent voltage-sensitive dyes, MVPro enables cancer cells to emit distinct fluorescence patterns and intensities compared to normal tissue. This allows surgeons and clinical teams to visualize cancer presence across surgical margins in real time.
Preliminary studies in nonmelanoma skin cancer specimens demonstrate that MVPro:
- Integrates with existing surgical workflows
- Does not interfere with standard pathological analysis
- Presents minimal risk to patients
- Identifies cancer in the same specimens confirmed by pathology

The platform is designed to generate a comprehensive, annotated 2D heat map of the entire surgical margin, offering a more complete view than traditional sampling-based pathology approaches.
Lucell Diagnostics is continuing development and validation of MVPro, with the goal of advancing intraoperative cancer detection and reducing the need for repeat surgeries.
